Philadelphia is the 5th largest city in the United States, the 2nd largest on the east coast, and the largest city in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The City of Brotherly Love, as it is often called, Philadelphia is located in the southeast region of the state at the junction of the Schuylkill and Delaware Rivers.

Philadelphia was settled in 1681 by Captain William Markham together with a small band of colonists. Prior to the American Revolution, it was the center of commerce and industry for the English colonies. From 1781 through 1783, Philadelphia was the capital of the United States under the Articles of Confederation. In 1790, it became the new nation's official capital under the Constitution until 1800 when the capital was moved to Washington D.C.

Philadelphia lies at the northern edge of the humid subtropical climate. This area is characterized by hot, humid summers and cool to mild winters. Rainfall is typically distributed fairly evenly throughout the year.

The city's harbor, one of the largest freshwater ports in the world, is the location of the AmeriPort facility, a major shipping center with rail links to the Midwest and Canada.

Major sports teams of Philadelphia include the Philadelphia Eagles (football), the Philadelphia Flyers (hockey), the Philadelphia Phillies (national league baseball), and the Philadelphia 76ers (basketball).
